Pro tips to help you make a pick

Local secrets to save you time and money.

1

Request the Front Seat for Best Photos

Ask for the front passenger seat in the Land Cruiser if you want the best photography angles and a lower chance of motion sickness. Passengers in the back get a wilder ride but less control over their camera. Mention it at pickup and the drivers will sort it out.
Book Evening Safari
2

Overnight Safaris Are the Hidden Gem

Sleeping under the stars in the desert, waking up to a sunrise camel trek, and watching a falcon display over breakfast is a completely different experience from the standard evening safari. It's probably Dubai's most underrated activity. Ask about overnight camp packages when you book.
3

Private Safari for Families and Groups

If you're travelling as a family or group, book a private safari for AED 800 to 1,200 for up to 6 guests instead of the shared option at AED 150 per person. You get your own driver, flexible timing, a quieter section of the camp, and the freedom to skip activities your kids won't enjoy.
Private Safari
4

Plan the Hot-Air Balloon Separately

The hot air balloon over the Conservation Reserve is a premium experience starting from AED 1,000 and it departs at 5 AM. You can't combine it with an evening safari on the same night. Schedule it for a different day and book well in advance because flights are limited to 24 passengers.

About Dubai Desert Safari Tours

The Arabian Desert starts just 45 minutes from Downtown Dubai. A desert safari is easily the most popular excursion in the emirate, and for good reason. You can go dune bashing in a Land Cruiser, ride camels across the crimson Al Lahbab dunes at sunrise, or do both in a single trip.
The evening safari is what most people book. Your hotel pickup is around 3:30 PM, and from there it's red dune bashing, sandboarding, camel rides, and then a Bedouin camp with BBQ dinner, Arabic coffee, shisha, henna painting, belly dancing, and fire shows. You get back to your hotel by 9:30 PM.

Interesting Facts (Fun Facts)

Al Lahbab's Big Red dune stands 300 feet tall. The iron oxide in the sand gives it that deep crimson colour, and it glows even more intensely at sunset. It's the most photographed sand dune in the UAE.
Book Sunset Safari
Safari drivers go through a six month off road training programme and have to pass advanced vehicle recovery certification before they can carry passengers. It's not something you pick up in a weekend.
Overnight desert safaris put you in traditional Bedouin tents under some of the darkest skies near any major city. On a clear night you can actually see the Milky Way just 50 km from the Burj Khalifa.
View Overnight Safari
Desert camps serve gahwa, the local Arabic coffee flavoured with cardamom and saffron, in tiny handleless cups. Shake the cup gently side to side when you've had enough. Otherwise your host will just keep refilling it.

Desert safaris operate 365 days a year including public holidays and Ramadan. Evening safaris are the most popular and depart hotels at 3:00 PM, returning by 9:30 PM. Sunrise safaris leave between 4:30 and 5:00 AM and get you back by 10:00 AM. Overnight safaris include the full evening programme plus breakfast the next morning. Summer departures from May to September shift 30 minutes later to avoid the worst of the heat.

4x4 Land Cruiser Fleet
All dune bashing vehicles are modern Toyota Land Cruisers fitted with roll cages, desert tyres, seat belts, and first aid kits. Each vehicle takes a maximum of 6 passengers. The drivers are DTCM licensed with at least five years of desert driving experience.
BBQ Camp and Bedouin Dining
Traditional Bedouin desert camps with carpeted seating, low tables, and cushions. The BBQ buffet dinner includes grilled meats, hummus, fattoush, Arabic bread, and desserts. Vegetarian, vegan, and halal options are standard. Soft drinks, water, and Arabic coffee are all included.
Washroom and Changing Facilities
Desert camps have clean washroom facilities with running water, mirrors, and changing areas. There's a freshening up station available after dune bashing. Leave valuables securely in the vehicle during activities.
Professional Safari Photography
Guides capture action shots during dune bashing and around the camp. GoPro dashcam footage of your dune bash is available for purchase. Some premium operators include a professional photographer who delivers edited portraits digitally the same evening.

Vehicle Access Only, No Wheelchair Routes

The desert terrain is soft sand and uneven ground, so it's not accessible for wheelchair users or guests with severe mobility limitations. That said, guests with mild mobility issues can still enjoy the camp experience since the seating, dining, and entertainment areas are flat and covered in firm matting.

Health and Safety Requirements

Dune bashing is not recommended for pregnant women, people with heart conditions, severe back or neck problems, or children under 3. Sandboarding and quad biking require a minimum age of 16. Camel rides are suitable for children aged 4 and up when accompanied by an adult. Seat belts must be worn during dune bashing at all times.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable closed toe shoes because sand fills open sandals fast. Go with light, breathable clothing and long sleeves are a good idea for sun protection. Bring a light jacket for the evening since desert temperatures drop 8 to 10 degrees after sunset. Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.

Is dune bashing safe during a desert safari?

Dune bashing is conducted by licensed, government-certified drivers in safety-inspected Toyota Land Cruisers with roll cages and seatbelts. 5

What should I wear to a desert safari in Dubai?

Lightweight, loose-fitting cotton clothing. T-shirt and shorts or light trousers. Open sandals rather than enclosed shoes (sand enters shoes easily). Sunglasses and sunscreen for daytime. Light jacket for winter evenings (November-February). Minimal jewellery recommended during dune bashing.

6

Which desert safari is best — morning, evening, or overnight?

Evening safari is most popular: combines dune bashing, sunset, BBQ dinner, and live entertainment in 6-7 hours. Morning safari suits adventure-seekers wanting action without dinner. Overnight is best for stargazing and sunrise. Heritage safari suits cultural travellers preferring camel treks and falcon shows over dune bashing.

7

Can pregnant women and elderly guests join a desert safari?

Pregnant women and guests with back or heart conditions should skip dune bashing. Most operators arrange a direct vehicle transfer to the camp. All camp activities including dinner, camel riding, entertainment, and shisha are accessible. Inform the operator at booking.

8

Is vegetarian food available on a Dubai desert safari?

All reputable operators serve both vegetarian and non-vegetarian BBQ dinner buffets. Typical veg options include hummus, fattoush, grilled vegetables, paneer, dal, rice, salads, Arabic bread, and desserts. Vegan and Jain food can be arranged with advance notice.

9

Where does the Dubai desert safari take place?

Most evening safaris operate in the Lahbab Desert (Al Lahbab Red Dunes), approximately 45-50 minutes south of Dubai city. Some premium safaris use the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve. The Lahbab desert features distinctive red-orange sand dunes popular for photography.

10

Can I book a private desert safari in Dubai?

Private desert safaris provide a dedicated 4x4 vehicle and driver exclusively for your group (up to 6 passengers). You get a private table at the camp with personalised service. Pricing starts from AED 400-700. Ideal for families, couples, and groups wanting customised experience.
