Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE and the largest of its seven emirates, covering roughly 87 percent of the country's total land area. The city sits on a series of islands connected to the mainland by bridges, and the waterfront skyline is like nothing else in the Gulf.
This is the cultural heavyweight of the Emirates. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is genuinely jaw-dropping, the Louvre Abu Dhabi brings world-class art to the desert, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is on its way. But it's not all museums. Yas Island has Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and Warner Bros. World within walking distance of each other. Saadiyat Island has some of the most pristine natural beaches in the region. And head 30 minutes south and you're deep in proper desert, perfect for safari adventures through golden dunes.
Abu Dhabi doesn't have a metro system yet. Your main options are metered silver taxis, Careem and Uber, and the Darb public bus network run by the Integrated Transport Centre. Yas Island attractions are connected by free shuttle buses, which is convenient. For the trip between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the ITC intercity bus on route E101 runs every 20 minutes and costs AED 25.
Yas Islandis the best pick for families and thrill-seekers since Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and Warner Bros. World are all walkable.Cornicheputs you centrally with beach access, close to Emirates Palace and the Grand Mosque.Saadiyat Islandis ideal for culture and beach lovers, with the Louvre Abu Dhabi and pristine natural beaches right at your door.
Abu Dhabi is 130 km from Dubai, roughly 90 minutes by car on the E11 highway. The ITC intercity bus E101 departs from Ibn Battuta Metro Station every 20 minutes for AED 25 one-way. Many Abu Dhabi tour operators offer complimentary hotel pick-up from Dubai, so day trips are easy to arrange without worrying about transport.
Abu Dhabi is the political and religious capital of the UAE and slightly more conservative than Dubai. Swimwear is fine at hotel beaches and pools. In malls, souks, and public spaces, cover shoulders and knees. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque requires full-length trousers or skirts and covered shoulders. Free abayas are available at the entrance if you need one.

Avoid common mistakes and travel like a local with these actionable insights.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stays open to visitors until 10 PM. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and you'll catch the white marble glowing in golden light, then watch the 80 illuminated domes shift to a stunning blue-violet once it gets dark. This is the most photogenic time to visit, and it's not even close.
Yas Island sells multi-park passes covering Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld. A 2-park pass saves you roughly 25 percent over buying individual tickets. If you're hitting more than one park, always check for combo deals before booking separately.
Most Abu Dhabi day tours include complimentary pick-up from Dubai hotels between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, with drop-off by 7:00 to 8:00 PM. You won't need to rent a car or deal with intercity buses, and the guided commentary during the 90-minute drive actually gives you solid context before you arrive.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi alone deserves 2 to 3 hours of your time. Pair it with a morning at Saadiyat Beach, which is one of Abu Dhabi's finest natural stretches of sand, then grab lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants. The Manarat Al Saadiyat cultural centre next door often hosts free exhibitions worth checking out.
Abu Dhabi desert safaris run in the Al Khatim desert near the Empty Quarter gateway, and the dunes here are taller and more dramatic than what you'll find in Dubai. Evening safaris from October to March sit in a comfortable 25 to 30 degree range, which is perfect for the full BBQ dinner experience under the stars.
