Pro tips to help you make a pick

Local secrets to save you time and money.

1

Book the Evening Safari for the Complete Experience

The evening safari departing 3:30 to 4:00 PM includes dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, sunset photography, BBQ dinner, live entertainment, and stargazing, all in a single 5 to 6 hour package. Morning safaris skip the camp dinner, and afternoon sessions miss the sunset. The evening slot delivers the best value and the most memorable moments.

2

Add the Hot Air Balloon Flight on a Separate Morning

The balloon flight launches before dawn and finishes by 8:00 to 9:00 AM, making it impossible to combine with same-day safaris that depart later. Book the balloon for one morning and the evening safari for a different day to experience both. The balloon includes a light desert breakfast and falconry demonstration after landing.

3

Choose RAK Over Dubai for Better Value and Fewer Crowds

RAK desert safaris are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than comparable experiences in Dubai, with smaller group sizes of typically 4 to 6 guests per vehicle versus 8 to 10 in Dubai. The red dune landscape is more distinctive and less commercialised. If you're deciding between Dubai and RAK for a desert safari, RAK delivers a more authentic, intimate, and affordable experience.
4

Bring a Camera with Manual Settings for Sunset

The red dunes at sunset produce some of the most dramatic colours in the UAE. Smartphone cameras handle it well, but a camera with manual white balance and exposure control will capture the full depth of the terracotta and gold tones. The 30 minutes before and after sunset are your best window. Be ready at the camp with your camera as the light shifts.
5

Avoid Eating a Heavy Meal Before Dune Bashing

The 4x4 dune bashing session is thrilling but involves rapid acceleration, sharp turns, and steep drops. Eat lightly before departure and skip coffee or acidic drinks. Motion sickness is uncommon but possible. Sit in the front seat if you're prone to car sickness. The BBQ dinner at camp after the ride is a much better time for a large meal.

About Ras Al Khaimah Desert Safari Tours

Ras Al Khaimah's desert safari takes you into the distinctive red-sand dunes of the Al Wadi desert, a landscape dramatically different from the golden dunes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The terracotta-coloured sands set against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains create a uniquely photogenic environment that feels more raw and untouched than the commercialised desert circuits elsewhere in the UAE.
Safaris include classic dune bashing in 4x4 Land Cruisers, camel riding, sandboarding, and traditional Bedouin camp experiences with BBQ dinners under the stars. Tours depart from RAK hotels and are also available as day trips from Dubai, making them accessible to visitors based anywhere in the northern emirates.

Interesting Facts (Fun Facts)

Discover hidden secrets and stories.

The RAK desert features distinctive red-coloured sand dunes caused by iron oxide in the soil, the same mineral that gives Mars its red appearance. These iron-rich dunes are found only in the northernmost emirates and create a striking visual contrast with the golden and white sands found further south in Abu Dhabi and the Rub' al Khali.
Book Red Dunes Safari
The Al Wadi Nature Reserve that borders the desert safari area is home to the Arabian oryx, a species that was once extinct in the wild. Conservation efforts in Ras Al Khaimah have helped bring the population back, and it's not uncommon for desert safari guests to spot oryx and sand gazelles roaming freely among the dunes at dawn and dusk.
RAK's desert safari operators pioneered the hot air balloon desert experience in the UAE. The 60-minute flights launch at dawn and reach altitudes of 4,000 feet, offering panoramic views that span the red dunes, the Hajar Mountains, and the Arabian Gulf coastline. Three distinct landscapes visible simultaneously from a single vantage point.

Bedouin desert camps in RAK still practice the traditional art of Arabic coffee ceremony, Al Qahwa. The coffee is brewed with cardamom and saffron in a dallah pot over an open fire, then served in small cups alongside dates. UNESCO recognised the Arabic coffee tradition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015.

Why visit Ras Al Khaimah Desert Safari Tours?

The UAE's Most Photogenic Desert

The red-sand dunes of Ras Al Khaimah offer a dramatically different colour palette compared to Dubai's golden sands. The iron-oxide richness creates deep terracotta tones that shift from amber at sunrise to crimson at sunset, with the Hajar Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. Photographers and content creators specifically seek out this landscape.

30 to 50 Percent Cheaper Than Dubai Safaris

RAK desert safari experiences offer comparable, often superior, quality to Dubai and Abu Dhabi equivalents at significantly lower prices. Expect to pay AED 150 to 300 for a full evening safari with dune bashing, camel ride, camp dinner, and entertainment, versus AED 250 to 500 for comparable packages in Dubai.

Hot Air Balloon Option Unique to RAK

RAK is one of only two emirates in the UAE offering hot air balloon flights, and the only one where you can float over both desert and mountains simultaneously. The 60-minute dawn flight is an experience that simply can't be replicated on a Dubai desert safari and makes RAK the definitive desert destination for aerial photography.

Desert safaris operate daily year-round with fixed departure slots. Evening safaris are the most popular and include the BBQ dinner camp experience. Hot air balloon flights launch at dawn, approximately 5:30 to 6:00 AM depending on season, and are weather-dependent. Flights may be cancelled in high winds. Tours may be rescheduled during rare sandstorms. Ramadan doesn't affect safari schedules but camp dining is served after sunset during the holy month.

4x4 Vehicles and Safety Equipment
All dune bashing is conducted in professionally maintained Toyota Land Cruisers with roll cages, reinforced suspension, and deflated tyres for maximum dune grip. Vehicles carry first-aid kits, satellite communication, and GPS tracking. Seatbelts are mandatory throughout the ride.
BBQ Dinner and Refreshments
Evening safari packages include a full BBQ dinner at the desert camp: grilled meats, chicken, salads, hummus, flatbreads, and seasonal fruits. Vegetarian options are available on request. Soft drinks, water, Arabic coffee, and dates are complimentary. Shisha is available at the camp lounge area.
On-Site Washroom Facilities
Desert camps are equipped with clean, serviced washroom facilities. Most camps have Western-style seated toilets and wash basins. Hand sanitiser stations are placed throughout the camp area. Premium camps offer air-conditioned washroom blocks.

Vehicle-Based Accessibility

The dune bashing experience is passenger-based, so guests who can sit in a vehicle can participate. Camel riding requires the ability to mount and balance on a camel saddle. Guests with limited mobility can enjoy the desert camp experience with BBQ dinner, entertainment, and stargazing without participating in active rides. Notify operators at booking to ensure accessible seating arrangements.

Age and Health Restrictions

Dune bashing isn't recommended for pregnant women, guests with severe back or neck conditions, or children under 4 years old. Hot air balloon flights have a minimum age of 5 and maximum weight of 120 kg. Camel riding requires a minimum age of 3 with accompanying adult supervision. All participants must sign a waiver before desert activities.

Alcohol and Dress Guidelines

Alcohol isn't served at desert camps. Guests are advised to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps. Flip-flops aren't recommended due to hot sand. Bring a light jacket for cooler evenings between November and February. During Ramadan, food is served after sunset only.
